What happened to Kel Mitchell

Kel Mitchell was such a staple of the ’90s that once we were halfway through the ’00s his absence in popular culture compelled us to ask, “What happened to Kel Mitchell?” We became nostalgic for All That. We chugged orange sodas to fill the void left by memories of Good Burger. Kenan Thompson appeared on Saturday Night Live, and still, Kel was nowhere to be found. Online forums popped up asking, “Did Kel from Kenan & Kel die?” The prevalence of the question even led to an actual notice that, thankfully, turned out to just be a hoax.

No, the former Nickelodeon star who won us all over with infectious, amiable characters like the Good Burger employee Ed is still alive and kicking. He went through some rough times, almost becoming just another sad celebrity story, but eventually reclaimed his life and career. So, where is Kel Mitchell now? Well, he continues to write, produce, direct, and act, while also sharing his Christian faith as a motivational speaker. His journey has been a wild one, though, so let’s take a moment to look at where he’s been since Kenan & Kel disappeared from our TV sets.

Kel Quotes

  • I passed up a lot of work ’cause a lot of movies that may be out there right now I passed em up because there may have been a lot of cussin’ in ’em.
  • Every movie I do, or when I’m on the sketch comedy show, I don’t really get into it until I have an outfit or something funny with my head or face or something.
  • Invisible Boy was fun. Everybody else’s character, they knew where they were at already as a superhero. But invisible boy’s character, you kind of grow up with him within the movie.
  • I loved Spider-Man, Spider-Man was the man.
  • Being a role model, you just got to watch what you do.
  • Where I’m from, they’ll beat your head until it gets back down to normal size.
  • You could do a scene that takes 15 hours, but in the movie, it’s only 10 minutes. The scene where they put the sauce poisoning in; it took eight hours.
  • We didn’t know anything about comedy duos – Abbot and Costello, Martin and Lewis – we didn’t know anything about that. Kim Fields showed us a tape of Martin and Lewis and their old shows and they come through the curtain so we started doing research on them.
